The LABYRINTH hosts a GUY DAVIS Exhibit Preview

In collaboration with Art Originals, THE LABYRINTH bookstore at 386 Bloor St. West is currently hosting a preview of artwork by GUY DAVIS that will appear at the Gladstone exhibit on February 27th.  This mini-exhibit consists of nearly a dozen originals from Sandman Mystery Theatre, Davis’ signature breakthrough book from the 80’s and 90’s.  Also featured is an original cover from a BPRD issue.  As the Gladstone exhibit hangs only for an evening, this is your chance to take a long close look at these pieces in an intimate setting.  Check the Labyrinth site for hours of operation at:  http://www.animationroadshow.blogspot.com/

Workshop with BPRD & The Marquis artist GUY DAVIS

Our  collaboration with Art Originals in offering a workshop with  Darwyn Cooke last fall was an enormous success.  Building on the momentum of that event Art Originals is mounting a new artshow at the Gladstone Hotel on Saturday the 27th of February with fan favourite artist GUY DAVIS! The Toronto Cartoonists Workshop will be there to offer a rare  opportunity to study in a classroom setting with Guy.

The workshop titled “Constructive Storytelling: The 180 Minute Masterclass with Guy Davis” will take place from 1pm to 4pm on the 27th.  The cost of the workshop is $105. and space is limited to 15 students.  If you wish to take part in this workshop please contact Walter Dickinson at: info@cartoonistsworkshop.com .

Course details are as follows:

Constructive Storytelling: The 180 Minute Masterclass with GUY DAVIS

This 3 hour workshop will offer a  glimpse into the creative process of  the 2009 Eisner award winner for Best Penciller/Inker… GUY DAVIS.

The workshop will begin with a digital presentation illuminating the scope of Davis’ career and the steps he goes through to bring the written word to life.  Starting with the thumbnail process, Guy will show students how he directs the eye through each panel. Concepts such as staging, spotting blacks, shape design and visual flow will be discussed.  Students will have the opportunity to interpret and roughly lay out a page of script with sample character designs and reference provided.  Guy will then critique each student effort in an attempt to illustrate the multitude of possibilities for page construction.

Throughout the lecture component the instructor will demonstrate by drawing directly in front of the class.  By the end of the workshop students should have a strong grasp of how to interpret a page of script for maximum visual impact. Character design and research will also be touched upon.

Portfolio reviews will not be a part of this workshop, but Guy will be glad to give individual critiques when opportunity permits at the Toronto Comicon event the following day, February the 28th.

Make WORK IN COMICS work for you!

I recently became aware of an excellent networking initiative called WORK IN COMICS.  Run by local entrepreneur and publisher Nicola Defina , WORK IN COMICS is a free service to promote your skills as an artist, writer, designer or even.. publisher.  You can post your specialty in various areas and look for collaborators to fill the creative team for your upcoming project.

Awareness of the site is  growing and is even attracting the attention of longtime industry veterans like Donna Barr (Desert Peach).  Check it out by clicking the below screen capture.

SAW NOTES from SAM AGRO

“Working on the SAW franchise has been one of my best jobs. I have already worked on SAW 3 through 6 and I am currently boarding for SAW 7.

On the SAW films alone I have worked with 3 different directors, Darren Bousman, David Hackl and Kevin Greutert.  Each has his own unique personality, approach to the boarding process and shooting style. Adapting to the different preferences and needs of the many directors you may collaborate with professionally is a key part of becoming a successful storyboard artist.

In my  upcoming course “Show Me a Story: Fundamentals of Storyboarding”, along with all the basics of film language, cutting, pacing and mood, I will discuss some of what it takes to work effectively with your director”.- SAM AGRO

For more info on the upcoming workshop please  contact Walter at 647-502-7605  or info@cartoonistsworkshop.com
